With page and hand in hand, it’s time to leave this horrible planet behind.
The demon hosted(?) xeno held in the caves is healed up by the group, which he was very angry about. They then collapsed the entrance to the tunnel, after taking the psyker’s body outside where they gave it a proper honorable burial.
Gareth was not eager to come back, and said while he would not come back on his own, he would not fight them. The group manacled him and took him back to Craftdown.
Once back at the guard base, they saw that the base had been re-supplied, with new lights on, new lasguns which could fire at their half-track, new stoves, etc. It didn’t happen often, but apparently they did get resupplied every now and then.
Drake went to go try to find his Poindexter which would take over command of the camp. Zarkov went to go try and fix the more janky setups. Tybalt went to go drink and fraternize with the troops. Drake and Trina found one Second Lieutenant Kyrus, who seemed disgusted with the state of the camp. Drake had a good impression at first, and confirmed with Tybalt that the inquisition frequently had field promotions, frequently by execution. Drake instructed Colonel Haydn to form up ranks and cancel the holiday. Kyrus came up with a plan with less chance of violence, which would involve taking the guns and supplies and sending them to hover above the planet while the situation is worked out and getting them to wait it out.
Drake and Valthrain came up with a plan to assassinate Haydn while the men were forming up, and then informing them of the change of command.
They gathered the troops, walked out on stage in front of them, and in the middle of Haydn’s introduction, Valthrain cut him down with his power sword, stabbing his body as he fell, and then Priss intimidated the audience by crushing his skull. Drake declared that they were putting this base back in the ready state. Kyrus was field promoted and put in charge, which Drake explained to all of them telepathically. It went over decently well, no one openly revolted against them.
Drake instructed Kyrus to perform reconnaisance on the planet as their new mission, and Kyrus seemed really depressed about how he didn’t think he’d ever get to leave the planet.
The group returned to Scintilla and to the Lady Gray’s compound, and saw that she had added more weapons to the outside of the building. They turned Gareth in to Carsten, their handler.
Once back, they went to a special ceremony with the Lady Gray and the upper tier, where they were congratulated for their success and promoted. But, as part of the ceremony, they had to have the special bolts made like Gareth had, that were tied to them. They also had to declare that they were willing to have them made, and willing to give their lives to the emperor They each gave their acquiescence to having them made. However, Valthrain was not chosen to have a bolt made, and it seemed like he was not being promoted with the group. The others dropped a drop of blood onto the bolts as part of the ritual, and became tied to the bolts, feeling their presence, as a sense of dread and foreboding came over them. Tybalt however, still had some doubt in his heart as to whether he could wholeheartedly give his whole life for the emperor.
The Lady Gray then addressed Valthrain, saying that he just had not served long enough to be promoted, but he got the sense while she was talking that she was lying to him.
The bolts were then taken away, and once they were gone, the feeling of dread faded. The rest of the inner circle congratulated them on their success. One, Maurant talked to Drake specifically, talked about his rise from the gutter to where he is now.
The Lady Gray then talked to the group about the ‘endgame’, which is essentially waging war on other inquisitors, who follow Philus’ teachings. She wanted to make sure they were ready for the strain of turning on their brothers in the inquisition.
She also gave them her ‘debt’ to Maya the rogue trader, so that Maya now owed the debt to the group.
Their new mission would involve gaining access to more ships in anticipation for this Inquisition war. She knew of a sympathetic commander in the navy, who would need to be promoted to give them the support they needed. He would need to replace his superior officer, by whatever means they deemed necessary.
She mentioned an upcoming conclave, in order for inquisitors to gather and determine exactly what constitutes heresy, and other radicals would try to get philus’ teachings moved more into the acceptable range there.
